Our journey so far
1898
African Homes Trust is established by a collective of innovative individuals who got together to help those who couldn’t afford to buy their own homes.
1901
We issue our 20 000th policy.
1935
Our service offering grows when a new subsidiary Funerals (Pty) Ltd is formed and several funeral businesses are acquired.
1966
We enter the Information Age. Innovation has always been a core value and even though computers were only launched to the public in 1971, we were at the forefront of technology when we bought out first computer.
1976
Gertrude Molete is appointed as an agent at the Atteridgeville branch in Pretoria. She makes her way into our history book as the first Black woman to be appointed as an agent.
1979
African Homes Trust merges with Metropolitan Life to become Metropolitan Homes Trust Life.
1985
We change our name to Metropolitan Life.
1986
Metropolitan is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
1991
Our total premium income breaks through the R1bn barrier for the first time.
1995
We draw a line in the sand in the fights against HIV/AIDS when we establish a dedicated AIDS Research Unit.
2010
We merge with Momentum to become Momentum Metropolitan Holdings. The Metropolitan brand remained the consumer brand of choice in the emerging market.
From mid2010
We receive top ratings each year in the annual South African Customer Satisfaction Index (SA-csi) survey, including the number one position in the ‘meeting and exceeding Customer Expectations’ category.
2017
A strategic reset – From Reset and Grow to “Reinvent and Grow”. The revitalised mission for our business is strongly anchored in our purpose – to help you achieve your financial life goals.
2020
We expand our digital capabilities and future proof the business. When the world was brought to its knees during the COVID-19 lockdown, the digitisation of our services allowed us to continue with business as usual.

There’s nothing ordinary about what we do. That’s why we’ve been around for 125 years and look forward to another 125+ years of serving our communities.
