Mantuba Nkhoesa had just finished high school when she joined Metropolitan as a financial adviser. Her career has progressed since; she has been a branch manager at one of the top performing branches for almost a decade. When asked about her job, she says she’s in the business of making people happy. Mantuba does this by helping clients achieve their life goals through solid financial advice and open conversations with clients about what matters to them. She describes her role as similar to owning her own business within a business.

A good financial adviser has to have great social and time management skills. Understanding that you are not just a salesperson will equip you with a purpose that will help you excel in this career.

Key Competencies for a good financial adviser are:

  • Persuasive selling.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Fluent verbal and written communication and comprehension in English.
  • Good analytical skills, including numeracy.
  • Computer literacy.
  • The ability to speak multiple languages, including African languages.
